Dear Zo... (Q&A)

Hey Zo, I'm an absolute fan of Cosmo and it's one of my biggest dreams to be part of the amazing, fun, fearless and fab team. I was just wondering, as former editor in chief, what advice do you have for a hopeful young gal such as myself to make this dream possible? What steps should I take? I would love to intern at the least. HELP! :)Asked by: jaaayrin

Hi, Jaaayrin!

It’s always nice to meet Cosmo fans with big dreams. It makes me kind of sentimental to remember how excited and determined I was when I first started.

To make your own dreams a reality, I suggest working on them early. If you’re still in school, try to get your foot in the door first by getting to know the movers and shakers in the industry then by finding a way to connect with them. Be active on your favorite title’s social platforms, and keep up with their events and latest issues.

I suggest finding your way in, even as early as now. A lot of my good friends in the industry and big names in the glossies started out as interns and editorial assistants (myself included!). Some friends of mine even started out as members of the market counsel of some magazines.

Read a lot and figure out what it is about magazine- and feature-production that you find interesting. Is it the writing part? Do you like the intricacies of fashion? Are you tech savvy and design-conscious? Does your kikay heart flutter over beauty products and makeup? Then, practice, practice, practice. In as much as magazine work seems fun and glamorous, it also entails a lot of hard work. Gather and perfect as many skills as you possibly can to do the job—and do it well. Go for that writing workshop (will keep you posted on my workshop soon!), enrol yourself in design classes, or take styling courses from local art schools. And, don’t get tired of learning and being curious. (I still make sure to study a lot of writing, design, and even grammar books even until now.)

I know Cosmo hires interns all-year round. You can email them at cosmopolitanPH@gmail.com; they can probably tell you how to go about applying for their intern post. Or, give them a call at 451-8888 local 1059 to inquire.

Good luck, dear!

Love,

Z
